Why in the world are we declaring 4S. Surely its a nice spade part score.
7 of the 32 pairs arrived at the 4S level. Some probably were sacrificing at favourable vulnerability against a possible vul 4H. I think they call it INSURANCE.
So 6 imps in the bin ... this bin is beginning to overflow.

Our 2 heroes felt it was a good idea to wander into the auction and declare 1NT doubled with less than half the deck. Thats not going to work unless you are playing Grandpa and Grandma up in Sligo Congress and normally the grandparents take their tricks as well and sometimes Grandma doubles you....just to see if you are an honest gentleman. I mean it might be sensible to retreat to 2H once the double card has appeared ... you got 8 trumps ..
Nope .. 300 plus 110 was 9 imps in our overflowing bin ... Its time to empty that bin .. and start afresh.
So we drift along and with dinner time looming IRELAND trail HUNGARY by 21-2 .. and the overflowing bin has been emptied.

Now we are not planning on
7♠ here but 6♠ would be nice.
So how did our 2 heroes end up declaring what can only be called the IRISH trump fit.
A 1-1 ♣ fit at the FIVE LEVEL ...
John Comyn will have a field day. He will need a full bridge page for next Sundays Independent.
The mice and the grannys will be out in full force.
As the two ladies in Fitzwilliam said " They are not very good players .. we would play in 4♠
Maybe they entered it backwards in the bridgemate or maybe it was mis-boarded."
The living legend from the Orchard Bridge Club was quick to notice the 1-1 fit declared by the Irish.
We did not know at this stage who was playing and in what room.
However one figured it could not be Boland Moran as they are natural bidders.
I don't know what happened but 5♣ was not made and I think there is a song for this hand..
NNNNNN NINETEEN ..
Maybe our lads could play this LOUD.
Paul Hardcastle I think was the singer.

Hanlon McGann made an UP and DOWN 3N on the 2nd last board and also gathered in 6 imps when the Hungarians got ventured to the 5 level for some reason ... so 18 imps back on late boards reducing the 44-2 imp deficit to 44-20 and still a heavy loss.
Ireland are still finding out that DUMBOVICH knows how to play bridge.
The same DUMBOVICH gave legendary grandmaster BJ O'Brien a good trimming some years ago.
I saw the video .. " I am BJ O'Brien and this is Michael .... DUMBOVICH growled the bare legged Hungarian and then he proceeded to hand out a bridge lesson to the legendary BJ.
