Their first show of agression saw 5H doubled and as this is cold for 11 tricks it was just
5 imps tossed in the bin.

Then Hanlon McGann tried a 3NT which had no hope and with the Scots venturing no further than 1 HEART .....something is different in the hand evaluation or bidding systems ..
I can see what happened but these guys don't play real bridge .. they throw bombs and hope to strike a few buildings.
Its a 14-16 NT opening and the other lad has a nice 10 count so lets go 3NT ...

Back in the day David Jackson told McGann all about the benefits of 4333 hands and substituting Queens for Aces and all that good stuff. Unfortunately McGann believed him and this pile of shite 1NT opening was deemed to be a powerful 14-16 1NT.
In the bizarre world of Galligan this is almost a PASS ... 4333 .. No Aces .. 1 TEN and 1 SEVEN ..
I mean what planet is the lad living on ... MUST be planet McGann ..
Another 5 imps in the bin ...

Next its Hanlons turn to wheel out the Jacko 4333 hand ... Where did this great player come from.
17 balanced opposite 5 and he thinks he can make 3NT ... he even got a 3-3 break to help him ..
Most of the other matches are selling out to 2S or taking the push to 3C ...
Not our great HANLON ... down 2 and minus 200 ... Not even Garozzo and Belladonna could win with these TWO .. 7 more imps in the bin and thats a total of 17 to Scotland for doing nothing.

Board 14 and our lads bid a perfectly normal 6H and luck out to win 11 imps because Scotland are still doing nothing .. back in the game for doing NOTHING ..

Then ...more NOTHING ...

ahollan1: i wonder if 4  always void or 0/1
fuquay: On this hand, S has the timing to ruff three in dummy (third one high!) and hence can make 7
fabsayc: a rare animal, vul sac against not vul slam
ahollan1: poor east -- no void to bid
fabsayc: does double of 5nt pick a slam mean pick a sacrifice
fuquay: As pointed out by fabsayc (as well spectators) EW is better off playing at any level rather than letting NS play
fuquay: Although the bad splits make a bit tricky to play
fabsayc: 7 is not quite cold
fabsayc: it would be with 2-1 trump split
ahollan1: maybe not but i'm not betting on defense
fuquay: Declarer only needs to ruff three in dummy which is no problem
fuquay: The other 2 go on dummy's winners
fuquay: I have been asked why E doubled. I have no answer to this question.
ahollan1: the red card spoke to him -- or more likely "don't lead "
ahollan1: multon opened west hand 2  and martens kicked it up to 4  over 3
fabsayc: invite to sacrifice, ie negative slam double taken to extreme

Boland Moran failed to bid  a reasonable 7H ... I don't know whether they considered it
7H was bid against Hanlon McGann ... they might have found vulnerable sacrifice ,,,,of 7D ..
but this is looking at 4 hands I think .. and being vulnerable is not normal to be looking for a sacrifice.

FINAL SCORE .. SCOTLAND 30 IRELAND 14 .. and Scotland got 28 imps for doing NOTHING.
