Saturday May 30th Ireland Imps

Last night we ran with 34 tables in the Ireland Imps Pairs. The early leaders were a pair called Dadscar and Jackfoz. We will have a look at them later. Our interest was drawn when the poor Bishop got spiked by a fantastic SPADE lead.

Dad & Jack running well

Board 1 saw a fast 2D opening catching Mighty Michael short of breath and 5 imps was won
Board 3 finds our lads wheeling out the Jack convention and an 18 count was able to drive into a making small slam.
Board 4 a small dent .. Board 5 a normal 4H ..and Board 6 sees our gang escaping in 5D undoubled.
Board 7 8 9 see danger looming as BJ O'Brien and the experienced Alan O'Sully arrive.
Our gang sit up straight as always when Dublin Southies loom.
Board 7 our boys rest in the normal 4D making ..plus 2 imps
Board 8 our boys avoid all obstacles and beat 1NT plus 3 imps
Board 9 sees BJ sitting happy with 4 trumps AQ82 against 4H but his partner Sully falls from
grace as BJ flicks his braces and the chair wobbles and dadscar drives off into the sunset.
A nice 9 imps present for the gang from Sully.
Board 10 the suspicious Bishop misses an easy game as teabag offers him bidding advice
Board 11 Dadscar splutters on ignition and as the Bishop awaits the takeout double nothing happens.
Down 4 and a few imps to Bishop
Board 12 Nothing
Board 13 The Bishop gets the prayer beads out but not even prayers can down this one
5H doubled and made by dadscar.
Board 14 The Bishop opens the strong NT and in a silent auction the Bishop lands in 3NT.
Not too bad he thinks as he awaits the opening lead. I forget whether one sees dummy before the lead or not as I don't play much these days ..
Suddenly a bolt from the blue .. the spade 9 hits the table ... The Bishop looks at the prayer mat
and thinks why has God deserted him ...a nice game contract suddenly has no play.
It turns out our man Jack has found a master lead. I must stick that one in my lead software.
At the end of the hand ... Teabag booms ...."Some lead that " ..
It was a great lead ..it was the only lead .. Fair play to Jackfoz.
It was like Seamus Darby pushing all 4 Kerry defenders in the back or Johnny Flaherty goaling against Galway to win the All Ireland. Awfully lucky.

I am throwing my Robert Ewen in the bin .. A book I have called "Opening Leads"

Boards 15-24 don't look too interesting as Dad and Jack ambled home in 3rd place.

One notes the good performance of top Malahide Regional Bridge Club player Elvis in the French Bridgez thing but as is often the case he needs to look higher up for the real player.

Link to Bridgez   ....this is a really good daily test...

Given the bigman Elvis gives it a shake most days ...might be an indication

Friday May 29th Ireland Imps

Last night yet again we ran the Ireland Imps Pairs. We are struggling now against the massive amounts of CBAI virtual clubs. Paul Porteus has all the darlings running in the same direction.
However they play 1NT P P P hands but we play no hands with 1NT P P P. We play with a little bit of cerebral energy and sometimes the cards are all shook up. As we are playing imp pairs we are good training for the major Autumn team events that Diarmuid Reddan has planned at the online Limerick Bridge Congress.
We also have the very much in form Mr Paul Tranmer and Mrs Helen Tranmer who are massacring all who are unlucky enough to reach their table. Clearly this indicates a well studied bidding system and some good agreements and an excellent defensive signalling method. Apparently its an Acol base for the bidding and a HELO system for the defence. No wonder they get 35 kibitzers every night.

One Northern Ireland kibitzer indicated NIBU should automatically select them as a pair for all NIBU teams they are eligible for. With Rex Anderson and David Greenwood in tandem and Wayne on sideline if Mrs Tranmer gets tired the Camrose would be guaranteed. However one suspects the table pressure of professional bridge players like Forrester and Robson and the like might damage the psyche of the Tranmers and the years maybe catching up with Anderson Greenwood. Also the opposition in the Ireland Imp pairs is very ordinary so maybe we need to try out the Tranmers in a tougher environment before throwing them into the Camrose.

Ely carries Kay to victory

The Gordons Gin crowd were making loud noises about the results last night.
I just said well done and went on my way. They were claiming a victory on 52 imps but I trust BBO are better counters then Gordins Gin drinkers.

Ireland Imps May 28th

The Ireland Imps pairs is loaded for registration now at 1400 hours.
However players won't see it until 1905.

Judi and Dan win
but one notes the looming presence of murphyslaw in 3rd place with many luminaries far behind him. Maybe they are just pretend luminaries. Even the mighty garve and his bat took a hit from murphy last night.

As Declan the Donplayer said in the drinking club one night...."Go easy on him he is only a child at cards..he does not know the game like us lads"
Declan the Donplayer also cast an eye on Malahide legend Maurice Quinn one night ... "Eamon do you see that old lad over there ... Goofy smile .. Can of Guinness..cards in hand  .. Blonde tending his dummy.... thats where I want when I am 75 years old " .... Maurice was probably about 83 that night.

I spotted this board as I was reviewing last nights champions good boards.

Surely if E/W are not getting into the bidding here they are just handing over free imps. I think anyone not pushing NS higher than 2H is not here to compete just to be cannon fodder. Maybe I don't understand the game but I will be bidding something over 1H. 25 pairs are making a contract as E/W.
And the above pair EW are probably National champions on several occasions. They also have several tables of company doing similar lack of competition.

My next exhibit sees the next jar of jam handed over to the winners.

My West partner opened bidding and raised my SPADES to 2. Why am I selling out to 3H.
This is free imps for the winners. No wonder the Tranmers were hammering everyone.
I am not picking on any East Wests here ..the names are incidental but the lack of action on the above 2 boards would be commonplace all over Ireland night after night. I see 10 pairs selling below 4S.

Lets see if I can find one more.

East West sold out to 2S ...surely there is a way to push to at least 3H EW... let alone arrive in game of 4H which looks like a comfortable make. Free money for the winners. Surely a little more bidding can help.

Bridgez    ..a 16 board daily tourney but even playing just board 1 is enormous learning

Bridge Captain is now Free    .. the former commercial bridge playing program ..worth a look.
I looked at it does some stuff but is a little behind some of the commercial programs of today.
However you can certainly play bridge against it.

Bridgemaster on the Bridgebase Online is a superb piece of kit... either on front page or else inside BBO after you login at the PRACTICE area

New Ireland Imp Pairs starts tonight. Harder Hands.

New Ireland Imp Pairs starts tonight. Harder Hands. Better players.

Frank Kelly hmmm

This evening I played the challenge against Kelan and crushed him

Any win against Kelan O'Connor is rare so we celebrate by launching the new Ireland Imp
Pairs. Starting tonight better bidding ,superior card play and maybe even some learning and good manners. We might also learn how to alert correctly and always thank thegarve and kinder1 and shakervitz for their attention to detail.

May 25th and Tranmers again

The Tranmer annihilation continues. It is just carnage.  Have not seen carnage like this since the Coen Trophy in 2001 when I was lucky enough to find myself in Heat 4 partnering 3 team mates also in Heat 4. Nothing was going wrong .. We played 6x5 board matches in a field which did not allow intermediates. 5 matches of 25 VPs and the other match we got 23-7 win. One of my days in the sun.

169 imps IN and 12 imps out over 30 boards ... 148 VPS out of 150 .. 98% ...

I have not seen anything like this since ........a one session wonder ,,,,

Tranmers win again  ,,, link to BBO results

Here we see the legendary Irish bridge player helpless in the grippers of Mrs Tranmer ..
No need for the famous Camrose player Tranmer Paul on this hand.

She was able to take down Hanlon all on her own.
////
This time Paul Tranmer uses his considerable bridge knowledge
The opponent commented afterwards .."Not even Garrozzo would bid 6C on this.
A lucky punt said another kibitzer ..
I would have still been doing my Stayman said another ..

We had 44 kibitzers at this table at one stage ... all watching eagerly as the master goes about his trade. Hanlon Garvey ...two helpings of Katie .. a bunch of shamrock and daisy ... all fell to the

Eamon forgot to put up Ireland Imps

Last night I forgot to setup the Ireland Imp Pairs at my normal 5pm or so. Thus when 9pm arrived there was no Ireland Imp pairs and although I put it up about 857pm it was too late. We ended up with 9 tables but still had some good hands.
This evening I put it up much earlier. I was trying out a few things for another director so we put up the Ireland imp pairs.

Last nights May 22nd results .. Aoife wins

The fast playing Pat Quinn and Diarmuid Reddan partnership came apart in last 2 rounds against Peter and Aoife. This almost allowed regular winners Tranmer and Remnart to slip into the gold medal seat. As the prize for winning each night is a game with craigbane I don't know why Tranmers want to win so much. Maybe its just the competitive instinct. I must do my sums and see who is winning the most. It used to be Denis Sheehan but I think he is no longer the King. thegarve is a regular contender but he keeps falling foul of the odds. Better check if my event is really loaded up there.

Ireland Imps Pairs Cairnsie & PaulMayo win

Last night in the Ireland Imp Pairs Mayo finally won something. Apparently some lady put a curse on the Mayo footballers for drowning her. However someone called Paulmayo won the day last night after seeing off the many times winners Tranmer1 and Tranmer2 in a 6 board head to head on rounds 4-5. The Tranmers were unfortunate to meet some tough opponents coming up the straight. Not much damage was done but the normal generous gifts were not being delivered. There were also few slam hands for Paul Tranmer to roll out the cannon on. There was also the presence of the glowering Murphyslaw in partnership with the talented but unpolished Thomas Gilligan in tow.
Gilligan needs to saddle up with Martin Garvey to gain the extra edge in bridge technique. His mate Sean Connor could tell him that.

Board 19 was a thin 4H with 7 plus working singleton facing a 3433 15 count. Not a thing that most are bidding and so it turned out. Carnsie and Mayo were in 4H and the hapless TerrySheridan partnership took the required save but still got steamed in the imps due to the field staying in 170 land. Even the powerful Tranmers did not glance past 2H.
Board 20 say the accurate CarnMayo bid to 5D quickly and gather in another 4 imps against the cautious 3S bidding Terry. Magic Murphy leapt to 4S over the Tranmer opening bid and played there doubled for minus 500. However he lost 2 imps on the limited field.
Then Board 21 I dunno but Cairnsie Mayo got the Tranmer gift on this hand with their opponents driving hard to slam with 3 losing diamonds in each hand. With this boost coming on 2nd last round Cairnsie and Mayo were not going to be caught as Tranmers tried to escape the firm grip of Murphyslaw.

The Ireland Imp roars and squeals May 20th 2020

Last night we had some roars and squeals in the Ireland Imps Pairs.

May 20th results Tranmers again

Another power packed performance from the Tranmers tonight. This format of bridge really seems
to suit their game. No matter what hands I throw up the Tranmers are doing well.
They also crushed the Sandy Millership game in the afternoon but that was more of a bunny bash as most of the pairs were intermediate. Thus a powerful player like Paul Tranmer is able to feed on the minnows. However last night he picked on a shark and the shark was not very happy as we will detail below.

Reverse Tranmer opened a normal 1C and thegarve as is his wont applied some pressure with a weak 2H jump overcall. The stronger Tranmer made the normal takeout double. Holding 11 high card points he knows its probably game contract for their side as his partner either has a strong No Trump or a long club suit with a lesser hand ..A stop in Hearts would have them on their way but double caters for a 4-4 spade it which on this hand is not there.
3D from the Caz who feels invited to this auction. Penalty double from the lesser Tranmer...sent back to Caz who trembles as she places 3H on the table. That is passed back to the stronger Tranmer who decides he will take the money. Two off double dummy pipes up the GIB ..small gain for garvey against 3NT/5C which might make from the North side. So 3HX it is with garvey at the helm.
So Club King lead from South Tower and North Tower signals for a spade with the club 7.
South Tower spins the spade 4 and thegarve plays low and North Tower wins Spade Queen.
Now its going 4 off and thegarve is unhappy but he takes it like an optician. He starts a diatribe about glasses and specs and magnifying glasses. When the steam clears its MINUS 800 and the Tranmers grab in 9 imps and move to plus 65 imps for the night.
The Tranmers also had some good success on the afternoon Wednesday as they turned their collective skills to matchpoints and whipped ass in the Midweek Northern Ireland event. I wish I could play as good as the Tranmers. I am going to study their defensive signals so I can improve.

Northern Ireland is a funny place for bridge ... One chap called Fearghal who is Inter B on their masterpoints got to play on the National team in the Camrose.

Ire Imps Pairs 2105 May 20th ..Galligan hits a bases loaded homer

Tonight we welcome as our special guest Hughie Draxler as he plays the cards awful well. The hands have been given a good shuffle so expect some fireworks. The hands are just shook up a little but nothing from any publication. Just the Really Weally Deally program with a little freakness parameter. I don't actually know what Freakness does but it gives us a few voids and not many 4333 hands.
I did a  great bit of slam bidding the other night against two great players from out the Northside.
They are still wondering about my bidding.

I opened 1H and my partner managed to bid 1NT over the spade intervention so I done a jumping bid of 3C as this shows strength .. My partner always shows support when he has it so 4C. I cuebid my Diamond Ace and now my 5 point partner rolled out the cannon so I had to jump the bidding to show him a void and he was able to bid 7C and I rolled that home.
The two lads gave me and my partner some very admiring looks.
So be aware when the Really Wheelie Dealing program goes to work tonight.

Ireland Imps pairs ... May 19th

Last night some players from the Sean Galligan stable won the day doing the overtake on the celebrating Cassandra O'Donnell on the 2nd last board. Wayne had the tongue strap on the mighty gelding MrT2000 last night as he needs him for future major events.

May 19th Dandyman and Ben

Tranmers reclaim the podium ... May 18th

Tranmers win 3rd night in 4.

The Tranmers must have the concentration of a snake watching a mouse as they keep defeating their opponents contracts. Once on the hook no fish escapes. So if you bid badly or weakly a Tranmer will spear you. Some poor divil one night opened with a 10 count and when their helpless partner responded 1NT and they got doubled and then they made it worse by rebidding 2S for some reason.
Then the Tranmer speared them for 800.
These poor folk play bridge but they don't understand the Maths. Everytime you open 1S you are over 90% likely to hold a 5 card suit ...so there is no great need to rebid in an auction were you have nothing new to say ...... the problem is they don't know the maths.

May 15th .. Tranmers Win but Raheny/Blanch Hospice morning.

In a very weakened field last night due to the ongoing online Killarney Congress we saw the return of the Tranmers to the throne. The opposition was fairly ordinary and the only player of substance I noticed was the veteran Derryman Craigbane. Other players of note were Jumping from Malahide with his robot. (so named by Noel C many years ago for his penchant for Jumping the Bidding)
We also had the progressive Declan Murray who will run his annual Patsy Higgins Hospice Fundraiser on Monday morning at 10am.

Link for donations

This event takes place 10am Monday morning and I suspect any folk who ask where there is room can play.

Ireland Imp Pairs May 14th The Return of the BISHOP

Last night the BISHOP returned to the throne. Despite serious opposition from the Tranmer pair the mighty BISHOP held onto his vestments. I don't know if John Lavery was a real BISHOP or just a priest but he had the Holy GOD on his side last night as he out sprinted the all conquering Tranmer pairing. Despite the presence of World Class Tommy Garvey aided by very decent player Donal MacAonghusa from Galway as well as the powerful grandmaster BJ O'Brien aided by the decent Alan O'Sullivan it took BISHOP and Teabag all their luck and effort to keep the Tranmers at bay.

Hand 16 saw Tranmer with a Joe McHale weak 2 opener PASS ...and be amazed to find BISHOP opening a weak 2 bid in the same suit. A very hungry DOUBLE followed and the BISHOP was in the CLAW. This woman must have got nothing to eat all day ... a 10 count that wants to play opposite a passed hand at the 3 level vulnerable. No wonder they are hitting the podium night after night.
The Crab Tranmer grips the BISHOP securely
Meanwhile a player called Liz opened a weak 2 on the West and despite opposition bidding she
thought it a good idea to inform partner again that it was a weak 2 in spades she held by bidding 3S just to be sure. Brendan Doyle up North was able to deal with that.
Then we had an anonymous called toscatwo give its version of events. I have to show this as it is the most bizarre bid of 4S I have ever seen.
I mean surely if you feel like bidding after getting the 3D bid from partner a bid of 5D might be the honorable thing to do. Its booked for 2 off vulnerable but at least you got 10 or 11 trumps and will hardly get doubled. However the chosen 4S is a scary thought.
Mel5939 is another example of the open weak2 bid and tell partner again in case she did not hear the first time. These folk wanted to leave early one night as they had work in the morning. I hope they don't work as bridge teachers.
The whole sorry tale of board 16 can be found here for anyone who wants...

Galligan + Jack play Hanlon and friends

Ireland Imp Pairs tonight 2105 ...register much beforehand

Beaware of the UPGRADE ..watch this video

Else at least read this ....
A new way to get left behind at tourney start

The famous grandmaster bridge player karel arrived last night moaning about getting kicked out at start. Nope ..he was goofing around over in the Casual area and never bothered reading about the upgrade. He would have noticed a small glitch as he was transferred across to the other server but that was okay until it went 912pm and he was not in the tourney and Pigot was in his ear about too casual. So read the above.

This afternoon I had time to download some files from a game Thomas Hanlon played in recently.
All great players and stars apparently ... well maybe not Tom Grue but he was still good enough to win stuff when Joe Grue was 14 and I was working in Minnasota.

Well seeing as I made a Jack file of the 25 boards and 14 pairs and given I managed to gash a slam on board 5 ...I thought I would take my claim to fame. However when the 20 boards are over no doubt I will be back where I belong. I don't know who any of these players are but they are all behind me after 5 boards of 25. I bid 5C and my robot bid 6C.

Ireland Imp Pairs May 10th

Tonight 40watts and 70watts won the bridge. No sign of the all conquering Tranmers.
Ah I spotted them hiding behind Petepunt in 6th place.
The Garve struggled to get his hands on the dummy for a while.
Kelan failed to make the starting line ... somehow managed to add 30 minutes to normal peoples time. 8pm plus 65 minutes became 935pm ...only in Kerry ..

The Killarney Online Diarmuidfest

Yesterday thanks to Diarmuid Reddan and his helpers we had the Killarney Online bridgefest.
Now I did not notice Nicky Wheels present but there must be a reason. Nicky turns up at every other dogfight in the real world but maybe there is no IPAD on his wheels.

Anyway a couple of hands that got my attention. I was following and keeping an eye on the Derry bridge expert O'Kane and his Austrian partner. So when BJ O'Brien rocked up with his possibly professional but seriously capable Limerick connected DanMac one feared the worse for O'Kane and herself. On the first board having no fear BJ fires off an old fashioned Ekrens bid.
Myself and Thomas MacCormac used to play this convention many years ago and at one stage we termed it "So good its better than cheating" ...Anyway BJ must have heard about it.

The first board anyway saw the Derry boy  open a normal 1H and BJ produced what was going to become a strong hand with Diamonds. A delicate 2H from South and an interesting 3C from Dan MacCormac. Now as BJ is not much good for the conventions unless they fit his hand for the post mortem one guess there is no lebonsohl at play here. A delicate 3H persuader from up top and BJ follows on with a 4D bid and with Dan MacCormac bidding 5D for some reason best known to himself the Derryman just had to sit there and gather in the 97% score for 5D vulnerable off 2.
...........
The 2nd board loomed and one expected BJ to strike back and even the set
BJ looked in his golf bag and found the Ekrens club and looked at his hand and thought that will do.
So a large swing with the Ekrens Club .... vulnerable and all ...and the ball went tumbling towards the rough.
A double from South showing some kind of values of the strong NT variety and DanOMahony pushed with 3H. The big man up North passed quietly waiting for another double and his bonus.
4C came back from South and the big man was probably doomed for a poor score. Maybe he would have passed 4C and got a decent score against all the other poor NS's who did not get the warning about the majors breaking badly. Anyway Danmac rentered the fray with a 4H bid. Something is very off with this version of DanMac on these 2 boards. Maybe he went to the offie and left his dog play the 2 hands. So when Michael O'Kane saw 4H on the table in front of him he quickly delivered the hammer ..slamming his whiskey tumbler and spilling the whiskey all over his shirt.

DanMac failed to make any overtricks in 4H and it was a fine score for the Derryman and the Austrian.

However that was only a skirmish. For some reason Danmac roared back on the rest of the boards and skinned countless opponents and put the incredible declarer O'Brien in the right spot many times and they ended with a 64% score on the session. However those 2 boards were strange for East West.
Getting clobbered by O'Kane is nothing new for BJ.

For some reason they played different boards in session 2 in 2 sections. Never happen in real life as Diarmuid always carries a dealing machine in his pocket with cables and you better put everything back as you got it if you are lucky enough to get to use it. I know it won't happen again or else it was BBOs fault or maybe BJs fault.

Ireland Imps Pairs May 9th

Conor Boland and Peter the Overtrick arrived at the top table on Round 8 and sniped the cruising Tranmers for a 40 imp swing on the final 3 boards. Its double bubble as anything gained is going backwards for the opponents. Thus Tranmers got their wires crossed and Boland swooped for 20 imps.

May 5th Ireland Imp Pairs play starts 2106 24 boards Swiss

We are starting at 2105 for 8 rounds of Swiss Imp Pairs
Results May 5th

Many congratulations to Thomas MacCormac, who has become the most recent addition to the ranks of Irish grandmasters.
Usually, this achievement is celebrated by a personal presentation of the CBAI Grandmaster’s salver, and Thomas had planned a gala charity evening for this purpose. Current circumstances mean, unfortunately, that a real-life gathering will not be possible, so instead TMCBridge will present a special invitational challenge match on BBO and Zoom, on Sunday 31 May, from 10:00 to 12:30, featuring the Irish Junior Team (John Connolly, Conor Boland, Stephen Barr, Michael Donnelly) versus the Irish Open Team (John Carroll, Mark Moran, Tom Hanlon, Hugh McGann, Adam Mesbur, Nick FitzGibbon). Zoom commentators on the match will include BJ O’Brien, John Murchan, and Peter Goodman, and there will be a 20-minute analysis session after the match.
All are welcome to attend, and the event is being run as a fundraiser in aid of Blackrock Hospice – a very good cause, so please give generously here.

Trsnmers crush all in comfort

Tonight in the Ireland Imp Pairs the Tranmers posted plus 120 imps to go with the 135 imps of 2 nights ago. Poor Thabo after climbing to table 1 was swiftly sent back down the leader board as the ruthless Tranmrs bid 2 grand slams against him.
Poor Doreen and Waggy suffered 40 imps of pain over 6 boards. However Waggy dumpeed 900 points of the pain on himself by leaving West in to cash a few unreachable winners.
