Board 3 was a sweet board for defenders first and if they missed their chance then it was up to declarer to deliver ...Both scenarios happened and in some cases both were missed

I suspect I caught a few large fish on several hands over the last 2.5 weeks. I think I reeled in the mighty Joe Comyn last night on some hand. Welsh international Adrian Thomas messaged me after last nights tourney and said .."We will do some practicing and return again" Adrian is a regular visitor to Ireland and Diarmuid Reddan  bridge events ..most recently at Holmes Wilson this year ....

We credit Gordon Lessells John Ferguson Michael Coffey and some chap from Donegal with the strip and endplay technique on board 9. Many others made it but got softer defence or right sided the contract somehow. Now its basic technique but at least several of those going down missed it.

The great bobz121 from Rathcoole failed to negotiate the 6S but he was taking on the 3rd best player in Britain at table 1 just before he started running out of stamina.

One thing which is very hard to do is put down a kinder ...
Here is the kinder minding the kindereile. He also messes up my story for this board.

This board features a surrounding play on defence against 4H. However yer man was never giving Anna or Cian a crack at that defence. 1H says his pard ..1NT says the German child and gets raised to 3NT and rolls that home while the rest in 4H await their fate.
Now half the North Souhs left out 4H by missing the defence. Many North Souths went plus against 4H but it was really declater tossing it away with 0% line.
Only the incredible BJ O'Brien was wide awake against 4H. and the Brain of Hull managed to emulate Kinder by playing in 3NT.

Ireland Imps Pairs March 26th

Board 1 looks like a handy 12 tricks in spades as the trump finesse is working.
However we don't bid slam on missing an ace and a king of trumps. However if you have reached 6S you might as well play to make it. We have 3 down in 6S and 1 down in 5S.

Board 2 is a mean hand unless you get a non-heart lead and sniff out the good news by discarding the hearts on clubs and after not suffering a ruff on 3rd round of clubs you might be in a position to play for 4-0 trumps.

Board 3 another horrible hand for declarers in 3NT ,,,
Aksooted went to the fridge leaving no pressure on declarer with spade king lead and thinking there was no encouragement switched to a heart .. What does a defender do here when following spade king apart from nod the head across the room encouragingly. Some might say you pitch the spade Jack. However a declarer might still cash out for 8 and pick up doubleton diamond queen.

Board 4

Ben 2 found the diamond king lead for some reason. Maybe it was unbid suit. Maybe holding trump Ace and a doubleton it might be a good lead.
Creativepard got a diamond bid from his partner so he was rocking.
Mloda_K found the diamond king lead and Ronan was happy to encourage I think.

Board 5 saw lots of players launch into a grand slam .. 32 hcp seems a long way off GRAND.
Small slam on this deal was paying out 9 imps plus.

Board 6 saw 10 declarers down in 4H on a very makable layout. One might play for 3-3 diamonds with the spade finesse in reserve.

Last night we had 17 tables in the Ireland Imp Pairs. Numbers were down due to Fearghal O'Boyle running Ireland Intermediate Pairs at 1930 and Regent Bridge Club weekly club event.
Easier night for me. I also tried running unclocked but now it was the fast players complaining "Why are we waiting" ....Its not like we don't have time ....Covid19 has granted us plenty of time.

March 25th Ireland Imp Pairs Results

Last night saw the less than powerful Coffey Lavery partnership take turns at offering the opponents a large bonus.

First of all the opposition West clearly play a different form of weak 2 then most Regent and Bankers trained bridge players. The West player must be used to going down as this is the biggest weak 2 bid I have ever seen. Back in the day the Regent Bridge Club made a club rule where you had to hold 5 hcp in order to make an opening bid. I don't know if this CLUB LAW was ever rescinded but it existed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This weak 2 opening would need a rule from the opposite end of the spectrum. Meanwhile the other partner is clearly used to a partner who opens the 3 point weak 2 bids and 5 card trumps or something and he duly bids 4H. A slam in hearts might be a normal proposition for EAST WEST ..

Now its magical Michael Coffeys turn to enter the fray ... he sees the need to boost the opponents into a slam. He produces a 5D bid vulnerable ... Must be the REVENGE convention ..wonder what the BISHOP did to deserve that.

and the opponents climb to 5H ...

Now the Bishop enters the fray ... 5 SPADES goes the mighty BISHOP .. gets doubled .. and sits it like Galligan in 1SXX in Brighton once ... down 4 was my result and 2200 out.
The BISHOP did not even revert to 6D ...despite his 4 card support of the other chap.

Here is an incident from last night. The players used for display purposes are not involved

So West opens 1H and North overcalls 2D and EW arrive in 6H making 12 tricks. 

West indicates if he had known the 2D was a multi type bid he would have reached 7H.

Now that is all probably very probable ...

However to me it is clear by examining the North players profile and from common sense that a misclick happened. I have never heard of 2D being a multi convention over a 1H opening. 

It surely should mean diamonds. 

Straight away I presume a misclick and on looking at Norths profile I see ..Joined BBO on March 22nd or so. Further investigation gets North telling me he is 2 days into this great website and is finding his way around. He clearly did not mean to bid 2D but meant to bid 2S or even 3S instead. 

So I gave West the 13th trick but West wanted the full 7H. I can hardly penalize a 2 day old Bridgebase newbie for a misclick. Eventually the West indicated he is retiring defeated.

To repeat it was not the players shown. Mind you Ewion and Skibbereen got a nice bonus from Kindereile and Smithy1066 but such is life.
