Fearghal O'Boyle lifted the veil on the changes in the LAWS of Duplicate Bridge published recently.
One major point was the lack of interest of most of the attendees to rush to look up a law as Fearghal mentioned various infractions. I expect most GAA referees of club senior standard have studied their rules from front to back and feed it back to their club mates. So our TDs should be moving forward in a similar manner.
John Royds gave a fine presentation on movements and the here to fore little studied balance in Howell and Mitchel one winner movements. John also presented a history of bridge movements and
his own experience of emailing a 90 something year old bridge movements legend.
SO all directors need to become COMFORTABLE WITH THE RULEBOOK.
The big change is in LAW 29 where bids and passes out of turn are now dealt with by playing bridge rather than poker. No longer do you have to punt 3NT because your partner is silenced. The offender just replaces his bid with a comparable bid and we play bridge.
