Euro Teams 2018 MONACO Round 5

So Thursday morning arrived and our backwards momentum team faced into the mighty previously unbeatable Monaco. However Monaco have weakened in the last while having been shorn of a few conventions. However they will still be a top 10 team in this event.

Board 3 arrived with Ireland leading 7-5.

This looks like a board for staying low. 4H EW could struggle  and the possible 4S is requiring some help to get moving.
Our East West  McGann and Hanlon for some reason wanted to declare 4H. This contract is plausible via 6 trumps 2 diamonds and 2 clubs ... but the diamonds are not working and the trumps are not so decent so its in trouble. Monaco took the hammer out and it drifted 3 off vulnerable.
Meanwhile in the other room Garvey took on a 4S contract and that was quickly down.
800 + 100 = 900 ... and 14 imps to Monaco.

Both declarers got a CLUB lead in 4H. Carroll made it and Monaco went down.
12 imps to Ireland now leading 29-19

Next we had both sides defending 4H. Both got the SPADE SIX lead .. Some one neglected to take the 2nd spade and left it away on a DIAMOND ACE. A double made it 12 instead of 10 to Monaco.

Ireland got some back on board 16

Monaco drove to the doomed 5C and someone let them know it was doomed.
Two down doubled added to a CLUB part score was 9 imps to Ireland

Ireland winning 41-33 for our first win after 5 matches.
